Every large-scale industrial project begins with a set of questions that have little to do with software features and everything to do with risk. After years of working with structural engineers and project leads across Australia, we have noticed the same concerns surfacing again and again. This post walks through the most common ones and how we answer them.
How much detail do you need from us before the first model?
Less than most teams expect. A site plan, a rough massing sketch, and a list of load assumptions are enough to build a useful early framework. We do not ask for finished drawings at the start. The first pass is about establishing grid lines, floor levels, and the main structural zones so that everyone can react to something concrete. Refinement happens in later iterations, not before the model exists.
Will the model stay usable after we change our design software?
This is a fair concern because most firms have legacy files in more than one format. Our BIM architecture is built around open exchange standards, so the core geometry and property data survive migration. We test this on every engagement by importing a sample of your existing files during the first week. If something does not map cleanly, we flag it before it becomes a problem rather than after.
Who owns the model once the project reaches handover?
You do. The model is a deliverable, not a tool we hold hostage. We structure the file set so that your internal team can open, query, and continue editing it without needing a licence from us. We also provide a short handover session where we walk through the layer structure and the naming conventions we used, so the next person does not have to reverse-engineer our logic.
How do you handle coordination with subcontractors who work in 2D?
Not every subcontractor needs to live inside a 3D environment. We generate 2D extractions directly from the model, which means the drawings always match the geometry. When a subcontractor marks up a PDF, we feed those comments back into the model and regenerate the affected sheets. The 3D model stays the single source of truth, but nobody is forced to work in a tool that slows them down.
What happens when the structural engineer revises a connection detail?
Revision management is where most BIM projects stall. We set up a clear change protocol at the start: every revision gets a unique identifier, a date stamp, and a list of affected elements. When a connection detail changes, the model is updated, and the downstream views that reference that detail are flagged for review. Nothing updates silently, and nothing waits for a monthly sync meeting.
Can you show us a sample of the rendering output before we commit?
Yes, and we encourage it. We produce a short visual study from your own site data during the discovery phase. This is not a generic demo file; it uses your grid, your floor heights, and your material preferences. You see exactly how the structural rendering will look with your project parameters before any long-term commitment is made.
